Terrain Diffusion

by Alexander Goslin

An AI replacement for Perlin noise that generates endless, realistic landscapes from a seed.

1.4k stars on GitHub, Oct 2026

Why it's useful

Trained on real Earth height and climate data, it makes mountains, river valleys and coastlines that look like actual geography, and any patch can be generated on demand so worlds never run out. You can export heightmaps as GeoTIFF or steer it from an Azgaar fantasy map. There is a ready-made Minecraft mod to see it working.

What it needs

An NVIDIA graphics card is strongly recommended; CPU works but is slow, and Macs are CPU only. Python setup; plugging it into your own engine means using the heightmaps or the Python API.
